The Brief
A fashion label moving from brass to stainless steel wanted gold jewelry that would not fade or turn green. Their customers had complained about plated brass pieces wearing through after a few months.
The Challenge
- Gold color had to match across rings, chains, and cuffs made by different processes.
- Chains have many small links, which makes an even PVD layer harder to achieve.
- The label needed 14 styles sampled at the same time for a lookbook shoot.
What We Did
We grouped the 14 styles by process: CNC for signet rings and cuffs, vacuum casting for pendants, and machine-made chains. All parts were mirror polished before coating, because PVD shows every scratch underneath it.
Coating was done in one vacuum batch per color lot to keep the shade consistent. We used a coating thickness of 2.0 to 2.5 μm and checked color with a spectrophotometer against a signed master sample.
The Result
- All 14 samples delivered in 9 days for the lookbook shoot.
- Finish passed a 2,000-cycle abrasion test and a 48-hour sweat test.
- Customer returns for color loss dropped to near zero in the first season.
